Produced in collaboration with neuroscientists at UCL, Drs Beau Lotto and Mark Lythgoe, this work is art and science; we intended it as an experiment in the gallery. It is a large immersive environment consisting of a mirrored space filled with gridded wires and projected film We are interested in ambiguity in perception and the point where there is enough information for the brain to understand what the eye is seeing.
The ‘film’ is of the structure itself and the ’screen’ is a giant gridded space of uncertainty. The work exists at the boundaries of film / moving . image. It also encompasses neuroscience, vision, geometry and illusion. It is designed to work specifically on the human eye/ brain.
It produces a strong effect in many people- they are often completely mesmerised by the aesthetic qualities of the work and are unable to look away.
The work was shown at “The Brain Unravelled’, a group exhibition at The Slade research Centre in September 2009.
The project is on-going
